چکیده
The Joseph William Gottstein Memorial trust Fund was established in 1971 as a national educational Trust for the benefit of Australia's forest products industries. The purpose of the fund is to create opportunities for selected persons to acquire knowledge which will promote the interests of Australian industries which use forest products for the production of sawn timber, plywood, composite wood, pulp and paper and similar derived products. " Bill Gottstein was an outstanding forest products research scientist working with the Division of Forest Products of the Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) when tragically he was killed in 1971 photographing a tree felling operation in New Guinea. He was held in such high esteem by the industry that he had assisted for many years that substantial financial support to establish an Educational Trust Fund to perpetuate his name was promptly forthcoming. The Trust's major forms of activity are, 1. Fellowships-each year applicants are invited from eligible candidates to submit a study program in an area considered to be of benefit to the Australian forestry and forest industries. Study tours undertaken by Fellows have usually been to overseas countries but several have been within Australia. Fellows are obliged to submit reports on completion of their program. These are then distributed to industry if appropriate. 2. Seminars-the information gained by Fellows is often best disseminated by seminars as well as through the written reports. 3. Wood Science Courses-at approximately two yearly intervals the Trust organises a week long intensive course in wood science for executives and consultants in the Australian forest industries. 4. Study Tours-industry group study tours are arranged periodically and have been well supported. The information contained in this report is published for the general information of industry. Tests to Determine the Joint Stiffness and Resisting Moment Capacity of Joints in Timber-Framed Houses
Wind and earthquake disasters in the world often cause billions of dollars of damage to buildings, most of which is to non-engineered buildings-especially homes. Wood-frame homes use connectors which exhibit partial rotational rigidity at the member ends, making analytical solutions difficult. This is due to the lack of information about the complex behavior of the connections used in this type...
متن کاملSummary of the fire protection foundation report - fire safety challenges of tall wood buildings
Buildings constructed from engineered timber are becoming more prevalent globally as building designers, owners and architects realize the sustainability opportunities with timber construction and the overall aesthetic of a completed timber building. As timber buildings are planned to be taller than many model codes permit, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Protection Foundat...
متن کامل3d Reconstruction and Simulating Assembly of Ancient Chinese Timber-structure Building
In this paper, Chi Lin Nunnery, the imitation of early Tang-Dynasty timber-structure building in Hong Kong, is used as an example to perform 3D model reconstruction and demonstrate the assembling process, as well as make a digital database of buildings. This paper gives an introduction to the features of ancient Chinese timber-structure buildings and also the workflow of 3D reconstruction of an...
متن کاملMeasurement of Moisture in Wood for Application in the Restoration of Old Buildings
There are many historic buildings whose construction is based on timber frame walls. Most buildings built during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were based on timber frame walls with vertical support elements. These timber frame elements are affected by their moisture content and by the passage of time. If the interaction of the timber frame walls with hygrothermal fluctuations wer...
متن کاملLearning from the past - designing timber multi-story apartment buildings on the basis of the timber construction heritage
Traditional Finnish timber construction is characterized by simplicity, clarity and scanty use of decoration. The traditional construction technique used a timberwork frame, which led to simple, cube-like building masses. Nevertheless, several log buildings erected around one yard formed a rich and varied entity, both in the country and in towns. The distinctive Finnish wooden town represents t...
متن کاملFire Safety Engineering – Opportunities and Challenges for Timber Buildings
The combustibility of timber is one of the main reasons that many building regulations strictly limit the use of timber as a building material. Fire safety is an important contribution to feeling safe, and an important criterion for the choice of building materials. The main precondition for an increased use of timber in buildings is adequate fire safety. This paper reviews the opportunities an...
